Brilliant work

I have gone through the other reviews and I disagree with the criticism a few of them show. I have so far read over 30 books on people-communications skills and relationships, and I believe this is one of the best. It is unique in its approach, ethical, very easy to read and, more importantly, it works. It absolutely works. I was pleasantly surprised for the results when applying the techniques. It is one of those books you read and re-read. Interacting with others successfully is one of the most difficult, yet rewarding aspects of life. I honestly think this book, if taken seriously, can dramatically improve that interaction. I have only endorsed five books in Amazon.com (Being an avid reader, I have bought and read about 120 during the last three years), and this is one of them.

Good ideas although too verbose

"People Skills" is a primer on interacting with others. Bolton's premise is that our communication patterns are inherently faulty and he urges the reader adopt his framework to remedy. He presents - in order - listening skills, assertion skills, conflict-resolution skills, and collaborative problem solving skills, with each building upon the others. He blends keen insight into human nature, concepts of psychology and basic Judeo-Christian values into what appears to be a very effective methodology. The skills seem obvious, but in practice are rarely used, and in fact are rather uncomfortable when trying to start using.
I found Bolton's framework very valuable and thus far see its application can profoundly improve my own people skills in both a business and parental setting. Unfortunately, like most books of this type, the text is extremely verbose. Bolton possesses a style that is much less dry and wordy than many of his peers - in fact, I find it difficult to finish most of these types of books - but the ideas plus examples could have been distilled down to one-half the length of the 300 pages. The text is also very well referenced and footnoted, but - as a lay reader - I think the constant crediting other psychologists and philosophers confuse and muddy the message. This could be a book that one could return to periodically to refresh their skills, but its length will prevent the less diligent. I found myself taking detailed notes on each chapter for later referral; while a testament to the material, I wish the author had made it easier to digest.

Starts strong, ends weak

Most books give you 2-3 really good nuggets of insight, hidden in a dry prairie of "heard-it-all-before." Such is the case with People Skills. Most of the content is obvious - have a pleasant demeanor when listening, reflect what you've heard, and so on. Not very insightful.

However I did walk away with a few insights. For instance, as you're reading this review, you may be thinking "Do I agree with this reviewer?" That's the first barrier to effective communication. We all have biases, we all filter what we hear to fit our biases, and we need to learn to turn off that filter - at least momentarily - and truly listen to what others are saying, without judging it too quickly. That insight alone made this book a worthwhile read.

There are other insights, supported by interesting research, especially in the early parts of the book. Later parts of the book begin to feel cumbersome, especially the entire section on negotiating conflict, which is based on a multi-step process that can easily be capsized if the person you're confronting is uncooperative.

Overall - good book, a couple good insights, but over-long and toward the end becomes less practical.

About the Author
Charles R. MacCluer is Professor of Mathematics and director of the industrial mathematics program at Michigan State University. His first interest was algebraic number theory but later turned to the more practical disciplines of control theory, signal processing, building science, and industrial problems. He is the author of "Industrial Mathematics, Boundary Value Problems and Fourier Expansions," and "Calculus of Variations."

Sweet and Thorough little survey of Applied Math...

For this Dover edition at $10, this little classic from 2000 has been revised in 2010 with corrections from a decade of comments. The format is to introduce the math first, then give practical applications with numerous exercises, examples, and selected solutions (about half) in Appendix B.

You can buy whole 370 page books like this on EACH of the topics here (eg: Applied Integral transforms as in: Integral Transforms for Engineers (SPIE Press Monograph Vol. PM66), used to be $80, now used for $30). However, MacCluer does a superb job of covering a very wide range of problems from signal processing to construction, manufacturing, finance and econ, and a number of topics in business as well as engineering (quant analysis stuff like cueing, simplex, linear programmming, etc.). There isn't a lot on Laplacians, but there is an excellent chapter on Fast Fourier Transforms, for example.

ODEs and PDEs are covered well, but of course dropped down to difference equation solution methods for both fast practical shortcuts and for using MatLab. There is even a couple little chapters at the end to show you how to write your report and present it-- which shows how much the author cares that you succeed-- he's not done this to show off his prowess, but for a refresher, self study, or new ideas in applying new shortcuts and Matlab to practical industrial problems. Of course the signal processing and electronics sections are particularly well done because that's his field.

General Dover: Dover editions pre-1990 (like the '60's/'70's/'80's) obviously don't mention one key detail: the web. THIS ONE does because of 2000/2010 update, and in fact even uses Matlab solutions. But here's a strange twist: a professor/buddy a couple doors down is Chinese with an Engineering PhD from MIT, and works in our Payroy group with China on royalties. He told me that Chinese technical schools are ordering PRE internet Dover editions, even in ENGLISH, specifically because of the quality of the underlying math WITHOUT the software/web. The logic is that if you "get" the equations, you can later on understand the reasoning UNDER the numerical methods, not just the numerical techniques! Interesting thought.

There are 15 to 20 applied math books we recommend to our technical library purchasing clients, and I have to say, compared to that bunch at $80 to $180, this little $10 gem stands out! How many applied math/engineering texts have a chapter on cost-benefit analysis and lifecycle costs! Fun, if only to break the intensity of the more complex PDEs in the rest of the book! Targeted to practicing pros, nevertheless a great undergrad tool (some math is grad level), and for $10 your very bright AP HS child/grandchild might get some value at least skimming ahead to "what's coming" in the real world if they're into a technical career. Good Book, hard for weak math backgrounds

Taking a graduate class using this book. If your math major and are curious how math is applied in different field, this book can do the job. Has many Matlab routines worked up along with some Mathematica or Maple routines. If you never coded before, you will probably struggle to understand the reasoning. Nonetheless, it can be done! Ties many backgrounds together i.e. Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Theory from Calculus, D.E., P.D.E. Some exercises are difficult without the proper background. Many examples provided serve as clues to solve the exercises though. I'm a student of Math and I have learned much studying this book and it has left me with more questions than answers (which is a good thing!).

This book examines the fads and fallacies that have and continue to plague psychiatry, in both diagnosis and in treatment. These include over-diagnosis (especially of depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, PTSD and autism), over-treatment with pharmaceuticals and the assumption that neuroscience has all the answers for psychiatry. The reasons why psychotherapy has long been prone to faddishness are explored; as are the reasons for more recent faddishness in psychopharmacology, which can lead to irrational methods of over-treatment, and a failure to consider alternatives. There is discussion of the problematic areas of diagnostic systems (ICD and DSM) and an over-reliance on drugs. Many examples from the author's own personal clinical experience are included. The author's strong opinions and critical tone may seem to conflict with the dispassionate approach of evidence-based medicine, however, the book presents balanced arguments and includes positive suggestions and recommendations for change. Until we really understand the nature of serious mental illness, psychiatrists need to resist fads in diagnosis and treatment and the author concludes that the best antidote to fads lies in cautious conservatism and the principles of evidence-based practice.

well personaly i think that green day are the best band ever and i would recomend this book to any of thier fans i gave it 5 stars but there is something else i want to say as well. the person who wrote the reveiw saying that green day cant sing and are rubbish is very stupid and rather annoying to me because i am only 12 and im sure they must be older than that but even i know that a review is where you REVEIW the product and im sure that judging by that persons hatrid towards green day that they didnt even buy it so therfore dont really have any right to reveiw it

Good book, but could have used more editing.

Green Day is a good band, and this biography is okay. However, there are many typos that can't be ignored (Green Day are bringing punk rick to the masses?) and the average person who flips through the book would think that the singer's name is "Billy Joe".

Most of the information is good, though, and most Green Day fans will enjoy it. The author makes references to his experiences with Green Day, which would've been cooler if it hadn't sounded like he was trying too hard to show how big of a fan he was.

The chapter about American Idiot was also poor, because it tried too hard to make Green Day sound like saviors for enlightening the world about the evils of George Bush.

It's alright. I'd give it 2.5 out of 5 stars.

More than just for business

I gave copies of this book to everyone I managed at Microsoft. I can't say enough good things about it. There is nothing more important in the workplace than being able to get your point across and making sure you understand what is being said to you. The basic philosophy is, "all communication failures are your fault." It is your responsibility to make sure that what you are saying is understood, and it is your responsibility to make sure that you understand what you are being told. There is never a place for finger-pointing when communication breaks down. This book gives techniques, examples, and ideas to help ensure that information is transmitted and received properly. What's really interesting is that there is nothing that limits what he's talking about to the workplace. There are things to think about here that apply to dealing with family and friends, without the fluff you get in similar books in the self-help section.

Easy read, good info

I found this book to flow well, giving a lot of good tips on how to conduct better communications in a business/commercial environment. The layout is fairly simple to navigate, and sections that are uninteresting can easily be skipped. For those with more constrained time schedules, the book contains notes in most sections that give highlights of the main points that are made. Reading just these notes would give a pretty good review of the material, or exposure that may or may not make a lasting impression.

There are quite a few lists and tables that sum up the "need-to-know" points, so I think that reviewing material after reading the full text should be an easy task. I highly recommend this text for anyone that has never been taught effective listening skills, and also recommend the book for anyone else that feels even a slight motivation to improve their inter-personal communication skills.
