I could see Bruce Wayne obsessing over this book....

This isn't the type of book that I usually read- but I found it immensely interesting. It deals with night fighters throughout history, from the Moshuk Nanren (China), to the Hashishins (Islam), and Ulfhedrin (Norse.) There is a fair amount of philosophical and spiritual information included with the nuts and bolts of how to move unseen and neutralize defenses- and opponents.

I suppose that this book feeds my dark side, but it provides the kind of information that outsiders and underdogs (i.e. freedom fighters) need to strike back. Indeed, the Ninja (Shinobi) struck back at the injustices of the Samuri and their lords. The Ninja were considered to be descended from Tengu- half man/ half crow demons. They were said to be forest magicians with supernatural powers.

I could imagine Bruce Wayne obsessing over this book....

A good reference for this topic....

This is the first book I've read by this author but not the first book of this kind I've read. I found Knights of Darkness to be quite engaging. The historical aspects of the book are quite good without being annoying. The author provides a healthy dose of history without making it a history book. Likewise, he provides a great deal of practical (or should I say "tactical"?) information which I found to be useful to someone in those kinds of endeavors. Along with this information, he also gives historical proof of it's effectiveness.
I was especially impressed by the section on developing your senses, as this is not the first time I've read this type of information. Several other books I've read mention the necessity, and advantage, of developing your senses. I am personally taking this to heart. After all, having better developed senses should benefit in all areas of life.
Mention has been made of the simplicity of this book. In defense of the author, the majority of people write on a third-grade level and read on a level not much higher. In an effort to reach the majority of readers, an author shouldn't write on a level challenging to college students. "Write simple, write for the masses."
I was also impressed with the author's inclusion of criminal organizations. Many authors would find including criminals as a "good example" to be distasteful. However, criminal organizations often use methods to achieve their goals which are wholly applicable to the topic of the book. As the author states, "If a tactic, technique, or training method works, use it, no matter what its origins. In other words, whatever gets you through the night."
In conclusion, I found this to be a very interesting and informative book. I would recommend it to anyone seeking information in this field.

Unique and extremely hot!

Unique novel with a touch of Game of Thrones. The story is beautifully narrated and we get to know the perspectives of some of the different characters. I really enjoyed getting to know and to understand them better after finding about their personal lives and what lead them to the actual circumstances. The sex scenes are really hot and even if, sometimes, I don't agree with some of the acts, they are reasonable under those circumstances and in that society.

I really loved how the author describes the places where the story takes place and the two cultures and societies involved. For some hours she brought me back to the Game of Thrones books, but with romance and erotic scenes ;-)

The only thing I didn't appreciate was the cliffhanger. Lately it seems that most of novels I am reading have a cliffhanger and it is difficult to keep up with all the publication dates and all the books coming up. It's very time consuming and frustrating for the readers and I'm positive that more than one series I really enjoyed I'll miss checking if a new instalment was published and, consequently, totally forget about it. However, I hope Ms. Wolfe publishes a new book soon so I don't forget her because I cannot wait for her next book!!

A Fantasy Tale worth the Telling

In this alternate world, the dwellers of Arcadia are protected from the Dark beings by the Wildlanders, a fiercely honorable race that lives outside the walls of Arcadia. The women of Arcadia are kept "pure" by preventing them from enjoying pleasures. The women must be thin, blond and prim to be considered good wife material. There is a long standing agreement between their Commissioner and the elders of the Wildlanders that the latter will protect the city dwellers in exchange for their unwanted women. Ava is not of the desired norm and has always felt different, but one day at the market she meets one of the Wildlanders and not long afterwards she finds herself being a tribute bride not just to that very warrior, but to his three classmates as well.
Ava has a hard time adjusting to their ways, but I have to say, the way the Wildlander's world is described I would pick it over Arcadia any day. They play hard and are fiercely loyal to their clan and family. I came away realising that they had far more admirable traits than the city dwellers.
The story contains explicit sex with Ava and her four mates as well as some m/m between two of her mates. A theme throughout is doing the right thing for the good of the whole and the value of honor.
While the Wildlanders certainly have fierce warriors, they are ruled by the elder women, unlike the city dwellers that place little value on women in general.

Good book. I read Vol 1 and Vol 2. First volume covered lathe work. This volume covers shaping and milling. One of the few textbook level books on machine operation that is well written and doesn't get bogged down in safety discussions. Actually covers the subjects comprehensively. Good book for someone like a hobbyist that wants to learn more about the operation of manual machines.

Very good book on manual machining

I purchased this book and the volume 2 as well. These books go into detail on most of the general purpose manual machines you are likely to encounter, as well as single point tool function and give quite a number of examples. It also gives a good number of charts on cutting speeds as well as correction factors for different depths of cut and feed rates. Gives k values for calculated horsepower required for a given cut. It covers the lathe, milling machine, shaper, planer, layout, surface grinder, cylindrical grinder, tool and cutter grinder and jig borer. As this is an older book, it doesn’t' cover CNC at all and has one chapter on CNCs predecessor, NC. This gives very good coverage of manual machining; I was especially interested in the shaper and planer chapters, as information on these machines is no longer available in modern texts.

Great book chock full of useful information. My personal belief is that manual machining is a necessity of everyone pursuing machine shop prowess. It gives a good foundation even for CNC users.

The White Cottage Mystery was Margery Allingham's first detective story, published initially as a newspaper serial.

Margery Allingham was born in Ealing, London in 1904 to a family immersed in literature. Her first novel, Blackkerchief Dick, was published in 1923 when she was 19. Her first work of detective fiction was a serialized story published by the Daily Express in 1927. Entitled The White Cottage Mystery, it contained atypical themes for a woman writer of the era. Her breakthrough occurred in 1929 with the publication of The Crime at Black Dudley. This introduced Albert Campion, albeit originally as a minor character. He returned in Mystery Mile, thanks in part to pressure from her American publishers, much taken with the character. Campion proved so successful that Allingham made him the centrepiece of another 17 novels and over 20 short stories, continuing into the 1960s.

A nice little British cosy murder

This story was originally run as a newspaper serial during the late 1920s and was not published as a book until the 70s, when a family member edited out the re-hashing of all the previous weeks' redundant action and re-submitted the manuscript as a regular mystery novel.

At only 130+ pages, it's really more of a novella but, it's still great hammock-reading.

A young bachelor driving his sporty convertible through an English town gives an attractive young gal a lift to her nearby home. He drops her off at The White Cottage and, more quickly than he can put up his top to avoid getting drenched by the rain, a shot rings out from the cottage. Along with a nearby constable, the young man, rushes to investigate and finds a man lying dead of a shotgun blast to the chest. It just so happens that the young man is the son of a renowned Scotland Yard inspector who is, of course, immediately called in on the case.

There are plenty of suspects in both The White Cottage as well as in the curmudgeony victim's incongruous mansion next door. The many clues point in one direction and then another.

Since the story first ran as a serial, there is plenty of action in this one, sort of a literary cliffhanger.

Margery Allingham is much more widely known for her "Campion" series so you might wish to read one of those entries first, "The Crime at Black Dudley," for instance, (the first of the series); however, just about any fan of British cosy murders will enjoy this one.

The White Cottage Mystery

When Eric Crowther is shot dead at the White Cottage there are plenty of people with a motive for killing him but no one seems to have had an opportunity to actually pull the trigger. Chief Inspector W T Challenor and his son, Jerry who happens to be nearby at the time of the shooting are totally puzzled by the case. Solving it takes them to Paris and to the South of France and provides an interesting mystery with some likeable and obnoxious characters.

This is the first book I've read by Margery Allingham and I am looking forward to reading other books by her. It is very much in the spirit of the Golden Age of crime story writing but it will still appeal to modern readers. The motivations of the characters are well done and the characters themselves are believable. There is no on the page violence and no swearing which will appeal to many readers who prefer their crime novels to be puzzles rather than opportunities for graphic violence.

This is an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Agatha Christie, Ngaio Marsh or Dorothy L Sayers.

Another great Golden Age mystery! A highly recommended read!

{ 5 Things I LOVE about The White Cottage Mystery }

Quite similar to Agatha Christie's works.
Okay, I haven't read A LOT of Agatha Christie (if you're definition of a lot is around 10 books or so) but the atmosphere, writing, and mystery as a whole really gives off the same feeling. Agatha Christie && Margery Allingham are both golden age mystery authors (if you don't know that, click the link above). So if you enjoy Agatha Christie's works, I'd say it's safe for you to give this a try :)

Intriguing from start to finish.
This really kept me hook from the start to finish. It's a cozy read - had me reading in a good pace, not completely thrilling yet not exactly boring. It's a good read that kept me interested all throughout. I LOVE how it made me suspect every single character - just how strong the evidences against them are, how strong their justifications are, and just how well Allingham did them.

W.T. Challenor is a noteworthy detective.
His strong sense of justice + his great character made me like him. His character really gave me that Poirot feel (Agatha Christie note here!!). W.T. questions everything. He may believe that one is the likely murderer but he will not pin on that person unless he gets actual evidence. The way he talks to his son, Jerry, is also very interesting. I like how he takes Jerry's opinion and explains everything. It's like I'm Jerry at times (other times, Jerry gives uninteresting opinions though).

The murdered is highly unlikable.
Everyone not only disliking but HATING Eric Crowther makes everyone an immediate suspect. They all have motives and some have strong means of killing him. I like how W.T. took each suspects one by one. Allingham's take of elimination but ending up in a dead end really made The White Cottage Mystery a more intriguing read.

The plot twist!
I guessed right, actually... But still... Just thinking about it really just made me admire and like Allingham. As a reader of mystery, I always go around: 'I didn't see that coming', or 'that really caught me off guard'. But this... this plot twist that I totally saw coming and did not caught me off guard was simply delivered so well that I it doesn't really matter even if I guessed it right. It's. just. great.

OVERALL, The White Cottage Mystery is a mystery that kept me hook from start to finish. It has a strong detective and a really good plot twist. It's highly recommended for mystery readers especially those enjoy Agatha Christie's works.

A Dune Too Far?

In the aftermath of the Butlerian Jihad, when mankind overthrew its robot overlords, the Empire struggles to survive the turmoil left behind. As the Corrino Emperor strives to strike a balance between the remnants of the Jihad, determined to assert control over humanity, and Venhold Spacing, who hold the only key to safe travel through foldspace, two rival schools who will one day play key roles in the galaxy take their first faltering steps. The Mentat School especially finds itself thrust into the centre of intrigue and danger.

Dune is one of the seminal science fiction novels of the 20th century, a philosophical space opera full of great concepts, multifaceted characters and musings on family, power and fear. It inspired such great speculative fiction as Star Wars and the Wheel of Time series. A handful of sequels followed, whose reception varied, before Frank Herbert died leaving the series unfinished and poised on a cliffhanger. Fast forward a few decades and Herbert's son, along with prolific scifi author Kevin J Anderson, picked up the torch. Beginning with a prequel trilogy detailing the fued between the Atreides and Harkonnen that forms such an important part of the original book, the Herbert/Anderson duo have gone on to complete the original series, before returning to the deep past of the Dune universe. Mentats of Dune is the latest in the series, a sequel to 2011's Sisterhood of Dune.

The obvious question to be asked with all of the prequel/sequels written by the duo is whether they bring anything to the universe Herbert created or whether they are nothing but a cynical use of a beloved saga. While I don't think the motives of Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson are cash related - their love for the universe is obvious - I also think that it may be time for them to let the Dune universe lie.

By this point, it is difficult to have a conscious discussion about plot when it comes to the Dune books without going into a long rambling explanation. And that is one of the main faults with this book - it relies so much on connect-the-dots scene setting and winks to the audience that it is hard to discern a clear plot to discuss. The book is called Mentats of Dune and yet for large parts of the book the main Mentat characters are almost secondary to what is happening. There is very little tension and few characters I personally felt invested in.

The writing is fine - clear, crisp, without major infodumps or long descriptive passages. However I found myself skim reading the book, reading just enough to discern what was happening and how each situation would be resolved. There is very little of the sense of wonder left - it feels like each planet is similar to the one before, and even Arrakis was missing that special something that once made it so compelling.

The book ends without any major surprises. It left me without any major expectations for the follow-up, beyond a mild interest in seeing how the Atreides will rise from their current position to the powerful house we see later. I imagine I will pick up the final book of the trilogy, but unfortunately I think that may be the last Dune book I pick up for a while.

Mentats of Dune may be the bridge too far for some fans, though from what I have seen on other blogs and forums that bridge was reached a long time ago for many others. Lacking the sense of wonder that made Frank Herbert's original such a hit, this is paint-by-numbers space opera. I didn't hate it but it did leave me numb. Not a book I will be remembering at the end of the year by any stretch of the imagination. I gave Mentats of Dune 2 disembodied robot overlords out of 5.

brian and kevin, just stop. seriously.

I will be fair to Brian and Kevin and say that this series is definitely better than most of the other McDune books they've written. It seems that the further you go into the past, the better the books are. Hunters/Sandworms was a utter abomination that should have never been put to paper, the Heroes series was unneccessary dreck, and the House trilogy, while not a completely horrible read into itself, was unneccessary as part of the Dune series and would have been better off if it was its own original series with original characters.

This leaves us the far-in-the-past prequels - the Butlerian Jihad trilogy and this series. This series, like the House trilogy, would have been better off as an original series set in a universe that Brian and Kevin created by themselves. This Schools series is a continuation of the Butlerian Jihad trilogy, about the early days of the Duneverse.

Except... this is not Frank Herbert's lovingly-crafted Duneverse. It's some... cheap, twisted, McDonald's version of it. Brian and Kevin have thus far penned what... a dozen McDune books by this point? When a ghostwriter (technically this doesn't fit Brian and Kevin since they're using their own names - thank Shai-hulud for small favors, but I can't think of a better word at the moment) writes more books than the original author, then it's definitely time to put the pen (or keyboard) down and walk away.

The Butlerian Jihad series and this one would work much better if it was completely original, set in a universe created by Brian and Kevin, with some good editing. And this book is DEFINITELY better than Dune 7 and the Heroes books, only because there's less of the original Dune to contradict, as this series is set over 10,000 years before Frank Herbet's Dune.

However, this book still only merits 1 star because it manages to have many contradictions and illogicalities. Look, Brian and Kevin aren't Frank Herbert, and I certainly don't expect them to write exactly the same as FH, or have his depth, but some parts of this book are downright ridiculous and embarrassing. Brian and Kevin simply do not have the talent to come anywhere close to Frank Herbert, nor do they show any amount of respect and care for the legacy that they're "adding" to. They don't bother to keep track of established canon or facts set in FH's Duneverse (as woefully illustrated by the Heroes of Dune and Dune 7 books) and this results in some WTF moments in this book regarding the Bene Gesserit (Valya Harkonnen and Raquella) the Mentats (ALbans isn't as smart as he is supposed to be) and even the Fremen (WTF is this I don't even...)

Frank Herbert's Dune was filled with meaning and hidden messages, meant to provoke our minds. The Dune that Brian and Kevin write is no more than badly-written fanfiction with characters who don't understand what they're doing or why they do it. Honestly, the level of sophistication in this book reminds me of Gloria Tesch's Maradonia books (and no, that is not a good thing!!!)

It was a real chore to slog through this, rarely do I come across a book where I literally have to force myself to turn the page to finish the book.

Have read every one of the Herbert/Anderson series. All their novels re-hash events at the beginning of each chapter, but this time it was over the top annoying. Seemed like the book would be half as many pages without the recaps. Was also hoping this book was the final "bridge" to the first Dune book. Nope, Contrived to get yet another book in there. No meat to the story either, kept waiting for it to get to the good stuff, but didn't happen...disappointing.
