So much more than I expected

First off, I have to say a few pages into this book and I was wavering on whether to continue. The plotting was good but the writing was a bit rough. How wrong I was. After the first 5-10 pages or so the author really hit her stride and things just kept getting better and better. This is an excellent coming of age/coming out story. Well plotted, fantastic dialogue, great pacing and very gripping. So gripping I read the (quite long) book in less than a day and now have very sore eyes!

If you enjoyed Taking the Long Way Home, Keeping You a Secret, Annie on my Mind etc then you'll enjoy this.

The thing I really loved was the how well fleshed out the world was - all the peripheral characters were distinctly drawn. It was a bit like being plunged into Pretty Little Liars with a main character that is (working out that she's) gay. There was also a lot of subtlety around the coming out process which I really appreciated.

If the beginning was a little more polished than this would be one my favorite books in this genre, ever. As it is it's a fantastic read and I'm glad I stuck with it. I highly recommend it.

Happy I Gave This a Chance

This is the 1st time I've chosen to review on Amazon (though I read quite a bit). I was so surprisingly touched by this book that I felt compelled to review. The author writes about the subject of coming to terms with ones own sexuality, first love, coming out (or not coming out) , and all that those things encompass. She does so with intelligence, compassion & respect. She tackles the different ways people deal with finding out a person is LGBT...from the person themself to parents, siblings, friends, schoolmates, etc. She shows the many different views and reactions. A 17 yr old HS senior is the main character, however, the story could be about anyone, at any age dealing with the same topics. The story is happy, sad, funny, angsty & sweet. I will be sure to read any other offerings from this author & I would love a sequel ...

Hated finishing it!

It was a slow start- but once you get through the first 5 or 10% your hooked. I was constantly interested, only put it down to go to work. Read it in 2 days, and was so sad to finish it. Strong characters, strong storyline. It wasn't one of those books where everything is expected either- plenty of twists. Deals with accepting yourself and coming out. I recommend it to anyone! Loved it and was sad when I finished it.

Beautiful Edition

The book I refer to is the Viking Arkana edition, copyright 1992. It is a beautiful book, bound in a dark blue, soft cover (although still technically a hardcover book). It has G's signature on the front cover in gold, and it is printed on good quality paper. It contains the entire first series. Finally, it has a built in thread that can be used as a bookmark.

Amazing!

This book was so good, I loved the story and Carter Ross' sense of humor. On pages 94-107 I was actually laughing out loud (I never do that)! His references to Paul/Powell was just so funny. Brad Parks, you are an awesome writer and I have enjoyed all of your books!!

Laugh out loud funny

I love this series with Carter Ross, the intrepid newspaper reporter in Newark, N.J. Carter is a nice guy. You could invite him over dinner and be entertained. He is, also, a very good reporter and stumbles into a mystery of two dead cops who supposedly committed suicide. His investigation takes him all over Newark and into strange places. He visits a warehouse/store that is so laugh out loud funny that tears rolled out of my eyes.

I don't know what it is NJ that produces such funny detectives. Carter is a breath of fresh of air with innovative plots. He's got a great supporting cast of characters including a boss who wants to have his baby. Why is it never sex discrimination when it goes the other way? I digress.

If you're looking for a good mystery that is fun, you can't go wrong with this one. Pour yourselves a nice beverage and enjoy the time you spend with Carter Ross. It's a great way to spend the day.

THE GOOD COP is the fourth book in Brad Parks's mystery series and will emerge as a terrific summer read

Brad Parks draws Newark, New Jersey and the Newark-Eagle Examiner as if they are characters in his novel, THE GOOD COP. His protagonist, investigative reporter Carter Ross, tells in the first person the story in which he becomes embroiled, a device that allows readers to really get to know him. As he introduces himself, Carter says that his job does not require him to get to the office at any particular time before 11ish am.

So when his phone rings and wakes him up at 8:30am, Carter is very disgruntled. He grudgingly takes the call, which comes from the newsroom. On the other end is Kate Mossman, "one of the editors on what was formally called `the Nonstop Newsdesk...to feed the insatiable content beast that is the [paper's] Web site." She is trying to tell him that a policeman has been shot; he is immediately fully awake and "grabbed his notepad." This is definitely his news story.

The cop is Detective Sergeant Darius Kipps, and he was attached to the Fourth Precinct, which Carter says he "knew well." But instead of going to the station, he decides to check the property records; he finds that even though Darius had several addresses, it seemed that he lived in East Orange with his wife, Naomi. Carter decides that while other reporters can cover the detective and his death, he is going to visit the widow. Even though he doesn't know all of the tertiary facts, he feels that the widow is the best one to interview. He tells readers that a policeman killed in New Jersey will "attract the attention of every television and radio station in the Greater New York area."

As he is knocking on her door, Carter ruminates about how difficult and stressful this kind of visit could be. But in the end, he rationalizes his way into saying that words can be uplifting and "they can provide hope. They even comfort a grieving family." Carter is surprised to find the house full of black women who clearly are there to comfort Naomi. They are both curious and hostile when he is introduced to them. Mimi (her nickname) also shows him her newborn and tells him how much her husband had wanted a boy.

As Carter is working the story and his contacts, he gets a call from his editor that the story is not going to happen. Darius committed suicide. From what Carter has learned from his associates and family, he does not believe that the cop was dirty. Fusco, his policeman friend, almost breaks Carter in two when he bravely suggests that if he was, that would be a motive. NO WAY!! Fusco is adamant.

While readers are immersed in this convoluted suicide/murder, another subplot emerges: gun running. Parks introduces this as a crime with which dirty cops are involved. They are the brains behind bringing the merchandise into New Jersey and wherever the money is. Carter gets involved in this investigation too, even before it is a legitimate case.

THE GOOD COP is the fourth book in Brad Parks's mystery series and will emerge as a terrific summer read. His writing is easy to read, and the complicated cases he foists upon Carter Ross are helping him grow as a hero. Readers will find themselves happily going along with him as he becomes involved in a series of cases.

Probably the best angiography book available currently

There are now a lot books available on fluorescein angiography. I can tell you that the Monographs book published by the American Academy is just average. This book is excellent. Dr. G. Richard wrote most of the text with Dr. Yanuzzi doing the chapter on ICG angiography and Dr. Soubrane contributing on AMD. The book is all glossy paper and every other page contains FA or ICG images with text on the left page and images on the right. The image quality is superb. I do wish it came with an image CD so that the images could be used for talks.

The atlas is broken down by disease state and even offers up quite a few rather rare diseases. Also are chapters on general principles and interpretation. The reference section with each chapter is also very nice to have and the index is well done. Perhaps the best thing about the FA images is that the book shows images from all phases of the angiogram. And, the images are bigger than in most books! You get more than just one picture. So for example, for central serous, the book shows a red free, arterial filling, laminar flow phase, recirculation, and late phase from the same eye. 5 pictures. And this is typical of the entire book. Each image has its own individual descriptive caption, and the text is appropriate in detail as well.

Its not perfect though. For example, on the section on RPED, all 6 images are red free. So you dont really get an FA example of a simple serous RPED without hunting for in other sections of the book (there is one in the ICG chapter comparing the ICG-A and FA). There are also some mistakes where an image will be reversed. Also, there are some annoyances like for example, the text will say--the red free and FA did now show this but the ICG angiogram does, and all they show you is the ICG but dont show you the FA.

I highly recommend this book. Despite being 10 years old, it is still up to date for over 95-99% of the topics. The books by agarwal or shelly might be ok, but I found the agarwal book to be less focused, digressing to topics unrelated to angiography frequently. The shelly book is ok, but the pictures are smaller, with more white space between images. The other book I would consider in the same leaque as this one would be that recently published by Dr. Holz. You will be happy with this book though.

Throughout modern history, outside combatants have fought on behalf of causes ranging from international communism to aggrieved ethnic groups. Analyzing the long history of foreign fighters in the modern era helps us understand why they join insurgencies, what drives their behavior, and what policymakers can do in response.

In Foreign Fighters, David Malet examines how insurgencies recruit individuals from abroad who would seem to have no direct connection to a distant war. Remarkably, the same recruiting strategies have been employed successfully in all foreign fighter cases, regardless of the particular circumstances of a conflict. Malet also catalogues foreign fighters in civil wars over the past two centuries, providing data indicating that they are disproportionately successful and growing in number. Detailed case histories constructed from archival material and original interviews demonstrate the same recruitment patterns in highly diverse conflicts including the Texas Revolution, the Spanish Civil War, the Israeli War of Independence, and the Afghanistan War. The results show that foreign fighters from Davy Crockett to George Orwell to Osama bin Laden create and respond to strategically crafted appeals to defend transnational communities under dire threat.
