About the Author
Dr. Kim MacLin is Associate Professor of Psychology and Law at the University of Northern Iowa. She received her Ph.D. in the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Social Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. She teaches Introductory Psychology, Psychology & Law, Social Psychology, and Research Methods. She was a recipient of the 2005 Outstanding Teaching Award for Untenured Faculty. Her research interests focus on criminal appearance stereotypes, the source of those stereotypes, and how those stereotypes impact memory and decision making in a variety of legal contexts.

Experimental Psychology Textbook

I had to order it for my Experimental Psychology class. It is falling apart. Pages are coming lose, sections of the book are separating from the binder, and I still have another month of class. Authors need to think about a better binding system for this very expensive book. Not only that, the flow of the text needs to be revamped. A section is started on one page with a totally different section on the bottom of the same page and you have to determine which text goes with which on the subsequent pages. If this doesn't make sense, neither does the layout of this book.

this textbook is very convenient due to its small size and detailed information, it gives many actual case descriptions and examples. it is very research based and the information is very detailed and easy to understand, it does not have many tables and graphs for visual stumulation, i wish it did because then it would be a 5 star vote from me, but apart from this informality it is an excellent and informative learning and teaching device, especially after taking into consideration the degree of the subject itself. those of you who are required by your prefessors to purchase this book, as was i, you will not be dissatisfied in any way, shape or form. good luck and all the best wishes from me.

This book has one of the worst layout designs I've ever seen

This book has one of the worst layout designs I've ever seen. It seems to jump all over the place so you have no idea where you are reading. One of the chapter was broken up into the top half of the page across pages and the bottom half of the page across pages. The "cal louts" don't really stand out much from the rest of the text and the breakup of text and case studies is unclear. All in all, there may be good information in the book, but trying to figure out what on earth I'm reading and where the next sentence is going to be on the next page makes it really difficult to sort through whether the information is useful.

This new text takes the next step: It critically examines in one comprehensive volume the current, prevalent approaches to cross-cultural analysis at the level of nations that have been developed since Hofstede's work, offering students and researchers the theoretical and practical advantages and potential pitfalls of each method.

The book is structured into four distinct parts. Parts I and II focus on the main theoretical and statistical issues in cross-cultural analysis using Hofstede's approach and the different research methods now associated with it. Part II consists of presentations of all well-known (and some lesser known) large-scale cross-cultural studies since Hofstede's work that have explained cross-cultural variation in terms of dimensional models. Part III summarizes the main conclusions to be drawn from the presentations in Part II and l explains how the proposed models have contributed to our practical understanding of cross-cultural diversity.

Brilliant explanation of the science behind the similarities and differences in culture

In this book, Minkov comprehensively summarises and explains research on culture. His style is academic, but easy to read. He breaks down concepts and uses examples which make the most complex science comprehensible to a lay person. If you work cross-culturally or have to use cross-cultural psychological studies in your work, you need to read this book to understand what the studies are actually saying (not what is commonly reported) and their pitfalls. As psychiatry has particular meanings for it's words which have been co-opted and distorted by common use (schizophrenia for example) so has 'culturology'. Minkov makes this clear and puts the proper meanings in their place in a way which is clear and easy to understand.

This book focuses a lot on statistical techniques for analyzing ecological level data in cross cultural research. If that is what you want, then by all means get it because it will be hard to find a better book. It also presents cultural dimensions by many authors of which Minkov finds many to be useful for analysis.

If you instead want to get well rounded descriptions of culture I would recommend Hofstede's 2001 "Culture's consequences," Minkov's "Cultural Differences in a Globalizing World" and then earlier work by Parsons and Shills and Levinson and Inkeles. Of course "Cross Cultural Analysis" has more recent research in it than any of these other books.

Haven't finished reading - working through but good so far.
This comes across as a good state-of-the-discipline introduction and even mid-level review.
He takes the work of Hofstede further, particularly with respect to the World Values Survey.

Binder ready = a pain in the neck

Fine textbook, horrible format. I rented the "binder ready" version from another site T.he price has since gone down SIGNIFICANTLY, so I would just as soon have bought the book for Amazon's current list price. But the loose leaf format is absolutely horrible for a textbook. The pages are standard textbook page thin, so they tear easily at the holes (three-hole punched). It's also as long as you'd expect and that's a lot of slippery loose leaf paper to keep organized. I ended up working with the pages loose a chapter at a time while the rest was in a binder. It was definitely annoying and the pages barely stood up to very gentle turning in the binder.

If you can get it in any other format, do it. The loose leaf is awful.

Also, at the time of my use, the supplemental student website was also unfinished (no practice quizzes like the insert says there is), so I had to go back an edition.

Great Way to Make Shakespeare Accessible

This line of books was recommended by the older sibling of our child's team mate. She is in high school and the No Fear Shakespeare books are being used to help teach Macbeth. I purchased this as a first step into the whole line. I love it. It does not diminish the beautiful poetry of Shakespeare's sonnets, but it enhances them by providing straight forward explanations in modern English on the facing page. I feel more able to absorb and appreciate these works now. We will be purchasing more of these wonderful books.

He also describes the involvement of sexuality in the clinical manifestations of hysteria to witchcraft, and various collective manifestations of hysteria in the form of sexual permissiveness and unisexual behaviour. Arguing that hysteria is much more than an illness, Niel Micklem suggests that the denial of hysteria in individual patients has coincided with the creation of an increasingly hysterical society.

This book is about the nature of medicine's oldest and most controversial disease, hysteria, and why it has been the source of so much deception and uncertainty. Following a short account of the history of hysteria, the author approaches the subject by way of its psychological rather than its clinical appearances and looks into the background of hysteria in myth. Niel Micklem argues that it is the 'myth' of hysteria that has set the changing patterns of this disease over a period of nearly four thousand years. Sex and suffocation have always been prominent in this myth, which bears a striking likeness to aspects of the Myth of Eleusis; but equally striking is the unexpected and highly significant difference between these myths. Contrasting the two throws light on the nature of hysteria and its protean elusiveness. The focus of attention in this book, therefore, is not on what the signs and symptoms say about hysteria, but on the image of hysteria and what that has to say about the signs and symptoms. The results are revealing as to why hysteria is the cause of so much controversy and why it is something more than we understand by the word illness.

Dr. Niel Micklem's work on hysteria is an unsurpassed landmark in psychological studies. The book is the result of a lifetime's dedication to this complex and shady illness. His approach touches upon the medical as well as the mythical origins and historical development of an ever changing ethiology. There is simply nothing that can match his uncanny insights and depth of learning. Dr. Micklem was a sage of old times who could look into the seeds of psychosis. He was a master of paradox. Together with Adolf Guggenbül-Craig and Rafael López Pedraza, he belonged to a unique generation of jungian psychotherapists the like of which we may never see again.

Kindle Version Definitely Not User-Friendly!!

Unfortunately I had to return this encyclopedia to Amazon within an hour of purchasing it as it's kindle version doesn't have a page locator which would make working with it a nightmare from an academic-research point of view. This is a great pity as I was really delighted to have found that it had a kindle version. Major mistake by its kindle designers!

Good but....

Great information, an excellent starting point for any assignment or major easy at Uni. But no table of contents? makes it very hard to navigate. The book can be referenced just check out APA but like the last review page noted numbers will help a lot, for most teachers don't have access to a digital copy to check where the reference is coming from. Overall I'm happy with the product and a great start for any language teacher or student out to turn their physical library into a digital one but work is needed on the above points.
