About the Author

Frederick Christian Bauerschmidt is Professor of Theology at Loyola University Maryland and a deacon of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. He is co-editor of The Blackwell Companion to Catholicism (Wiley Blackwell, 2011) and has published numerous articles on medieval and modern theology.

James J. Buckley is Professor of Theology at Loyola University Maryland. He has been on the editorial boards of Modern Theology and Pro Ecclesia: A Journal for Catholic and Evangelical Theology, and is a member of the North American Lutheran Catholic Dialogue. He is author of Seeking the Humanity of God: Practices, Doctrines, and Catholic Theology (1992), co-editor of The Blackwell Companion to Catholicism (Wiley Blackwell, 2011), and has published in a variety of journals.

About the Author
Professor Eric Wolanski is an estuarine oceanographer at James Cook University and the Australian Institute of Marine Science. His research interests range from the oceanography of coral reefs, mangroves, and muddy estuaries, to the interaction between physical and biological processes determining ecosystem health in tropical waters. He has 370 publications and reports. Eric is a fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, the Institution of Engineers Australia (ret.), and l’Acade´mie Royale des Sciences d’Outre-Mer. He was awarded an Australian Centenary medal, a Doctorate Honoris Causa by the Catholic University of Louvain and a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Estuarine & Coastal Sciences Association. Eric is an editor-in-chief of Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, Wetlands Ecology and Management, and the Treatise on Estuarine and Coastal Science.

Eric is a member of the editorial board of Journal of Coastal Research, Journal of Marine Systems, Ecohydrology and Hydrobiology, and Continental Shelf Research. He is a member of the Scientific and Policy Committee of the Japan-based International Center for Environmental Management of Enclosed Coastal Seas, a Visiting Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a member of the College of Experts of the Australian Research Council.

Professor Michael Elliott is the Director of the Institute of Estuarine & Coastal Studies (IECS) and Professor of Estuarine and Coastal Sciences at the University of Hull, U.K. He is a marine biologist with wide experience in teaching, research, advisory and consultancy work in estuarine and marine aspects of ecological components and communities, and the impacts of human activities, as well as policy, governance, and management of estuaries and coasts. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and of the Society of Biology. Mike has published widely, coauthoring/coediting 15 books and contributing to over 200 scientific publications, which includes coauthoring The Estuarine Ecosystem: ecology, threats and management (with DS McLusky, OUP, 2004), Ecology of Marine Sediments: science to management (with JS Gray, OUP, 2009), and as a volume editor and contributor to the Treatise on Estuarine & Coastal Science, Elsevier, Amsterdam (Eds.-In-Chief E Wolanski & DS McLusky).

Mike has acted as an advisor on many marine and estuarine environmental matters for academia, industry, government, and statutory bodies in Europe and elsewhere. Mike is a past-president of the international Estuarine & Coastal Sciences Association (ECSA) and is also one of the four editors-in-chief of the international journal Estuarine, Coastal & Shelf Science and on the editorial board of Marine Pollution Bulletin. He is the Sir Walter Murdoch Distinguished Adjunct Professor, Murdoch University, Australia, and also has adjunct professor and research positions at Klaipeda University (Lithuania), the University of Palermo (Italy), and the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, Grahamstown. From 2014, he was appointed an independent non-executive member of the UK Marine Science Coordinating Committee and member of the Science Advisory Board of Marine Scotland. In 2014, Mike was awarded the Laureate of the Honorary Winberg Medal of the Russian Hydrobiological Academic Society.

It somewhat baffles me why Wilton didn't set a higher standard for a *professional* to demonstrate procedures in a longer DVD (or a series of DVD's) that you see the technics Begining to End with a professional look. I actually feel sorry for the women in this video and am very dissapointed in Wilton. I seriously wondered at one point if the cakes she was showing AFTER her short demomstrations of *sloopy technics* were actually cakes SHE did and not ones a professional did. If I didn't know better and this were the first time hearing or seeing a Wilton presentation, I would be looking elsewhere for my baking needs. What a shame.....

One would only hope that if Wilton considers doing something of same again, or if they have and I have not seen it, that it's presentation and professional standards are as notable as the Wilton name has been for years.

BUY IT.

I want to get into cake decorating and didn't know where to start. My daughter had her first birthday and I wanted to make her a cake. Although I've been baking for a while I've never decorated a cake. I was really nervous I would mess up. It came out great for the first time. I definetly recommend this for beginners.

It took me about 40 minutes to read this lesson plan thoroughly; while it is inexpensive at under five dollars, I still don't know if that is necessarily a good value. As some reviewers have pointed out, much of the book focuses on advertising Wilton products; without all of this the useful material in the book could have been condensed down to a couple of pages. I did like the photographs and the techniques for making different consistencies of buttercream for different uses. I had initially planned on getting the subsequent lesson plans as well, but I don't think it will be worth it. If you have any skill/experience with cake decorating at all, I'd recommend skipping this book.

Good compilition and artwork

This is a good compilation of stories, poems, sayings, songs, etc with wonderful artwork to go with them. I liked that all of the stories were relatively short. Some were only four lines and up to about 4-6 pages at longest length. What you choose to read can be chosen for many reasons like age of the child, length of the story, what they are currently learning, and how long they can focus. I strongly suggest that you preview each tale prior to reading to your child as some of the ending could be upsetting (like the gingerbread man who who gets eaten by the wolf or Solomon Grundy who is born on Monday and dies on Sunday.) Many of the stories can be used for teaching moments from science using the five fat peas poem to life choices/morals using the frog princess story about keeping your promises. The more difficult stories like the gingerbread man getting eaten, are better suited to for older children where they can discuss with you the moral (moral of this story: that you can want something so much or want something to be so true that you accept help/advice/support from anyone who offers it without considering the source of that help or advice or if it is something you should be doing/believing in the first place). Many of the poems would work for jump rope or patty-cake games. If you take time to research online I am sure you can also find out how to sing some of the songs like Farmer in the Dell. The book also displays diversity in that people range in skin and hair tones from very pale to dark and including red hair, white hair, and in case of some trolls green hair. Thumbelina is Asian, the frog princess is African, etc. However, I feel that the diversity could have been better and far too many individuals are still Caucasian. Not every page has people on it though, but it still would have been nice if all prominent stories were given a different race for the main character. I just want everyone to be equally represented. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase.

A Good Starter Volume of Fairy Tales

Ordered this for my young nephew. The stories are short and sweet for bedtime reading. The illustrations are not amazing, but they get the job done. Some of the stories/rhymes I have never heard of and are kind of bizarre, but for the most part, I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Great story book

My son is 10 years old and he loves the stories in this book. This is my second purchase. I gave one as a gift to my son's teacher because the class did a baby shower and the teacher loves books so I figured she will love this book too. The stories are short so you don't have to spend 15 plus minutes reading one story. Some stories don't even take 5 minutes of your time.

About the Author
Jose Garrido is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Kennesaw State University in Georgia. He holds a Ph.D. in Information Technology from George Mason University, and has written numerous books and papers on using object-oriented programming in discrete-event simulation. Richard Schlesinger teaches computer science at Kennesaw State University. His primary emphasis is on exploring new pedagogical methods in college level courses, as well as introducing computer programming to high school students. Prior to teaching at KSU, he received a Master's degree in Computer Science from Illinois Institute of Technology and then spent 30 years in industry. During that time, he worked on the internals of six different operating systems, as well as the design of several computers. He also developed various communication subsystems, several transaction processors, and cryptographic systems. He was one of the principal designers of the first working data flow computer.

Horrible OS book. Do not buy under any circumstances.

This is an absolutely horrible book. The book's teaching strategy is centered around many verbose OS simulation outputs. I would gather that ~50% of the books text is output from the CD's simulation package. I must also mention that the simulation package itself is exceedingly buggy and inaccurate.

I can not stress enough how bad this book is. If an instructor ever "requires" this book, DO NOT BUY IT. Buy a different operating system book, seriously.

I am a student of the author, and a skilled developer. Here's the skinny.

I am an application developer of eight years with enough systems programming experience to be useful in a assistant sysadmin gig. I started early but enrolled in an undergrad program to pass the "no degree, no job" barrier keeping me in dead-end independent contract work.

Dr. Jose Garrido, one of the authors, is currently my professor for an OS course (Spring 2014) at Kennesaw State University. I had him for one other course before, so I am familiar with his pedagogy. Don't get me wrong from the 3-star rating, Dr. Garrido is a great guy that is easy to get along with, and I enjoy having him as a professor. There are reasons I enrolled in his classes more than once, so please note I am judging this book and this book alone by it's merit and usefulness to those looking for a good introduction and reference to operating systems.

Okay, I lied. I do have one comment on Garrido: English is not Garrido's first language. The resulting text is certainly readable with help from his editors, but the text has an almost robotic flow due to the simplistic sentence structure. Although this paragraph does not appear in the book, it illustrates Garrido's writing style: "This is a computer. It is used for various applications. A computer can have an operating system. There are many types of operating systems. It used to be that there were no operating systems at all."

One of the big reasons I docked the rating was the fact a good chunk of the book is basically an ad for Garrido's Java simulation library PsimJ3. I worked with PSimJ3 for a project, and the simulation models were poorly designed. We're talking a singleton class with nothing but static methods and fields managing a multithreaded application using other classes with copied/pasted code. This is by no means a stable platform on which to write course material.

PSimJ and robotic prose aside, the text has bizarrely-shaped state graphs that obscure rather than clarify, and a focus on simulation models and benchmarking techniques that is so strong that it comes in contention with the title of the book.

This is not to say you wouldn't learn something from the book. I would recommend this text if you wanted to get a taste of simulation models and a fundamental look at how performance metrics relate to an understanding of various operating system types. The only real drawback is that you may find yourself refactoring or even debugging provided code.

But to be brutally honest with you, you would learn much more from a conversation with Dr. Garrido than from his work (there are several publicly accessible papers and resources of his through Kennesaw State University's Computer Science department's website: cs.kennesaw.edu

Decent book

Required for a class. The principles are decently presented and I learned quite a bit from this book.

As with most college classes everything is rush - rush, so the simulations are WAY over the top and a waste of time as they are something that need to be picked through to understand.

OH! The index is completely worthless. Don't bother flipping to back of the book to look something up.
