August 1971 drangen zwei Räuber in das Gebäude der Deutschen Bank in der Münchner Prinzregentenstraße ein, hielten die anwesenden Personen als Geiseln fest und verlangten zwei Millionen DM Lösegeld. Kurz vor Mitternacht kam es zu einer Schießerei mit der Polizei, bei der ein Bankräuber sowie eine Geisel tödlich verletzt wurde.

Dieser Vorfall hat in der Öffentlichkeit und in der Literatur nicht ohne Grund große Aufmerksamkeit erregt. Dieser Vorfall bildete einen Wendepunkt in der modernen Verbrechensentwicklung und der daraus resultierenden Problematik von polizeilicher Gefahrenabwehr und Strafverfolgung. Bei diesem Vorfall wurde deutlich, dass die Verbrecher mit der Drohung die Geiseln zu töten, den Staatsapparat nahezu wehrlos machten.

Diese verbrecherische Vorgehensweise entwickelte sich in der Folge wiederholt zur Methode die Staatsgewalt zum Eingehen auf Täterforderungen zu bewegen.
Die Geiselnahme während des Olympiattentates 1972 in München oder die Entführung der Lufthansamaschine „Landshut“ 1977 in Mogadischu sollen hier als besonders herausragende Ereignisse beispielhaft erwähnt werden.

Bei diesen besonderen Einsatzlagen, nämlich Geiselnahmen, ist die Polizei einerseits verpflichtet, das Leben der Geiseln zu schützen und sie zu befreien (polizeiliche Gefahrenabwehr) und andrerseits den Täter festzunehmen (Strafverfolgung) .

Im Falle eines Konfliktes zwischen diesen beiden Aufgaben ist die Aufgabe der Gefahrenabwehr vorrangig . Bleiben alle anderen Maßnahmen zur Rettung der Geiseln erfolglos, wird der Polizeiführer nach Abwägung aller Umstände und nach Beurteilung der Lage als ultima ratio die Anwendung des gezielten tödlichen Schusses, des so genannten finalen Rettungsschusses, in Betracht ziehen.

Die nachfolgende Arbeit beschäftigt sich auch nur auf die Anwendung des finalen Rettungsschusses in Fällen einer Geiselnahme, da in allen anderen Fällen Polizeibeamte wenn sie von der Schusswaffe Gebrauch machen, nur in der Absicht handeln, das polizeiliche Gegenüber kampfunfähig zum machen.

Hey! It's Ian from The Boss series!!!! Story offers lots of romance and humor with deep family and spiritual components.

First Time is a contemporary adult romance written by Abigail Barnette. Note: This novel is based off of characters featured in Ms. Barnette's amazing The Boss series, but I don't think you would be missing out horribly if you were to read it as a standalone novel.

As soon as I read that Ms. Barnette was publishing a new book, I one-clicked the preorder without any question. I am a loyal follower of her The Boss series and when I saw this was Ian's story I was sooooo excited. Ian isn't necessarily a main character in the series but he has had his moments in the spotlight and his character has definitely worked his way into my heart ♥. First Time adds gorgeous layering to Ian's character via family and spiritual elements and he is without a doubt the leading man in this book.

Ian's character is not ego-driven, he's not a millionaire or some cocky bastard...he's a fifty-three year old, down-to-earth man who is generous, loyal, protective, and just an all-around great guy. So as a reader, I want the best for him. His love interest, Penny, is a beautiful, sweet, and honest gal who I immediately liked. It's hard not to.

Oh...did I mention she's twenty-two?

Yes, I just wrote that bit with a raised eyebrow and cocked head. I'll let you know up front that I'm a hypocrite for judging. The main characters in The Boss series have a huge chunk of age difference between them and I have yet to bat an eye. The difference? Maturity. Sophie is a young but emotionally strong woman. Penny? Well, I started out loving her. After all, anyone who can make sweet, self-depreciating Ian feel like a superstar gets a thumbs up from me. But after the initial infatuation wore off and I got to know Penny a bit more, I was like...Ian, are you serious???? She is a sweetheart for sure, but for a twenty-two year old, she has got some major emotional baggage and overreaction tendencies. As a reader (and huge fan of Ian's), I don't support this pairing. She's a young, hot thing with a good heart, but she needs to grow up some before I approve.

Regardless of some negatively noted above, I still gave First Time four stars. There was a lot of humor and for a good portion of this book, I literally could not put it down. Crushes and new love can be so intoxicating and all of that positive energy was palpable - I was in a constant state of smile. That kind of experience is damn hard to ignore :)

Disclaimer: Ms. Barnette has published two different perspectives for this story: one in Ian's and one in Penny's. I have not yet read Penny's perspective, but based on Ms. Barnette's storytelling talent, I won't be surprised at all if I change my mind about Penny's character once I'm done.

"Sometimes, we want to love a person more than they deserve to be loved by us. And we'll do a lot of rationalizing to fool ourselves into believing that they deserve it."

Not a favorite of mine. Ian wasn't sexy enough and I couldn't relate to Penny and her "virgin" status -- yet she'd done everything else! It has its moments, but isn't as sexy as Barnette's other lovely books -- notably The Boss.

I really enjoyed Ian's story and there was just the right amount ...

I really enjoyed Ian's story and there was just the right amount of humor thrown in for good measure. The sex scenes were a little while coming for reasons made clear once you read the book. I've enjoyed the Boss Series and this was a nice addition by expanding on characters we've met before. Don't go hating on me but the reason I did not give Ian's Story a 5 Star review was I was conflicted with all the religious references included. I know it was part of Ian's character and he was a practicing Catholic (well he tried to be), I was maybe a tad uncomfortable having that incorporated along with erotic sex scenes. It seemed like Ian was a walking/talking double standard. Still a great read and I'm looking forward to reading Penny's Story.

A clear, crisp, relevant, and holy look at the Beatitudes

Jim Forest takes the reader on a thought-provoking journey by exploring the Beatidues as a whole and individually. Using examples from such diverse sources as the Desert Mothers and Fathers, Russian Orthodox saints, and contemorary peace and justice activists, he opens the Beatitudes in ways which allow readers to see their connection to our own times and lives. He does an especially good job delineating the meaning of words as they are used in the Beatitudes. A good resource for teachers, preachers, and anyone who wants a "new-old" way of looking at these basic teachings of Christ.

excellent commentary

For anyone, like me, whose ever read the Sermon on the Mount and thought, "wow, this sounds really beautiful, but what does Jesus really mean by this?", Forest provides an amazing discussion of these beatitudes, translating them from the eloquence of their Biblical language to the meat and potatoes of everyday life. This could can be read straight through, or one beatitude at a time, it's simple to read, yet challenging to live. I first read it in high school and read it years later and found I got even more out of it.

for theirs is the kingdom of heaven... (Mt. 5:3-10)

How often we Orthodox sing these eight verses during Divine Liturgy during the first procession, when the Gospel book is carried out of the sanctuary into the nave and then back into the sanctuary to be placed on the altar. And why? They are beautiful verses; and yes, the Church undoubtedly hopes they will sink deeply into our hearts; but again, why these particular verses? Why so frequently? And why during this procession? They are preceded by the familiar words of the thief who was crucified with the Lord, "Remember us, O Lord, when Thou comest in Thy kingdom..." We recall that Jesus is not only our destination in the house of the Father, but that He is also our way of getting there. Another liturgical procession will follow shortly, when we, with all our concerns and all of creation symbolized in loaves of bread, will follow the same path to the same altar as the Church shows us what life is like for us, what it is about.

There are eight beatitudes--or perhaps only one revealed in eight aspects--telling what it means to live in the kingdom of God and how to do it. Forest presents it as a spiritual ladder that we ascend in order, rung by rung--a series of steps we make, none skipped--in company with the Holy Spirit: in a word, our deification. It is a preparation and a process that we must do. Without God, it would be impossible. In this teaching, Jesus shows us what to expect in the world--a true reality check. And He not only tells us how to deal with it, but how to be blessed--indeed, refashioned--by it. The Lord teaches in an economy of words how to live dynamically with Him so that we do not simply endure passively whatever happens to and around us, but that we join ourselves to His co-suffering love now--here and now--in concert with all the events of our lives, and thus prepare ourselves for God's eternal kingdom. We are on a journey, and, in a sense, we are mystically already there.

In an extended look at these eight verses, Forest brings a wide and delightful variety of stories, wisdom from the saints, and scripture to focus on the way our new humanity is fashioned by means of our collaboration (co-laboring) with God in this challenging ascent.

Awesome book for personal study

Very quickly for those of you in a hurry: I am a relatively new believer and I felt lead to study the book of Isaiah, however, on my own without a study guide, it was just too difficult to comprehend. I bought this book just a few days ago and can't put it down! It's engaging, informative and enlightening.

More in depth: I'd been having difficulty staying focused when trying to read and understand the Old Testament, namely Isaiah, as that's what I've felt called to study most recently. On my own, I was just getting frustrated and would read a few paragraphs, and walk away from my Bible frustrated, not gaining much from that time in the Word. I wanted a study guide that would not only introduce me to the book of Isaiah and provide a background as to what was going on at the time he wrote it, but would also assist with comprehending the other Old Testament prophets. I knew that once I'd "tackled" Isaiah, I'd be on fire, so to speak, to "tackle" the other OT prophets.

This book provides all the information I was looking for, and more! It's easy to understand, especially when you look up the scripture verses as they're mentioned in the book. I've got a highlighter and a pen I keep handy during study times as well, so I can make notes and highlight the poignant verses that really touch me.

While the book doesn't provide information (for Isaiah) in the chronological order that he's written it, it does provide information topically. For instance, the author will discuss why Assyria was used by God to bring Jerusalem into repentance, and then the author begins to expose what happens to Assyria following their time of power. So in this way, the reader is prepared to understand the background and the context of what is happening. It's a fuller view of the entire situation and of the time in which it was written.

Additionally, the author provides information on Isaiah, the writer of the book and of his life. This is very interesting to read and also helps to understand the context of the book.

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone and everyone wanting to read and understand the Old Testament prophets and their writing.

An Introductory Study

Miller presents a genre of biblical literature by focusing on seven of the prophets: Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, Micah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and "Second Isaiah". Using the historical-critical method of analysis, he first decides which sections of a biblical book he believes to be truly written by the original prophet. This analysis of the compositional history affects his further analysis of the person of the prophet. Through textual clues, he attempts to paint a picture of the original author. After thus looking at the book and the author, Miller summarizes the theology of that author as presented in that book. Finally, he asks what relevance this message had in the twentieth century.
Miller also includes a few introductory chapters that look at the nature of prophecy, and two summary chapters that briefly cover the additional prophets found in the bible but not covered in depth in his book.
Each chapter in Miller 's book ends with a series of study questions to help the reader recall the central points of the chapter.
I would recommend this book for those who have some familiarity with the historical-critical method, but have never studied the prophets in depth.
