Review

"Any atlas of implantology is an ambitious project owing to the huge variations in implant techniques and fluidity of trends. The authors have indeed covered a huge amount of information looking at, in great detail, the background of implant development through to case planning and prosthetic techniques. This third edition looks to bring the text up to date from its original inception in 1992 and covers new sections on zygomatic implants and current implant morphology." Atlas of oral implantology Third edition Pankaj P Singh

"The authors should be congratulated on a fine effort. It is worth more than a glance if one of your restorative colleagues has a copy, if only to update your knowledge on the subject."

The Third Policeman, by Flann O'Brien

The Third Policeman is Flann O'Brien's brilliantly dark comic novel about the nature of time, death, and existence. Told by a narrator who has committed a botched robbery and brutal murder, the novel follows him and his adventures in a two-dimensional police station where, through the theories of the scientist/philosopher de Selby, he is introduced to "Atomic Theory" and its relation to bicycles, the existence of eternity (which turns out to be just down the road), and de Selby's view that the earth is not round but "sausage-shaped." With the help of his newly found soul named "Joe, " he grapples with the riddles and contradictions that three eccentric policeman present to him.

The last of O’Brien’s novels to be published, The Third Policeman joins O’Brien’s other fiction (At Swim-Two-Birds, The Poor Mouth, The Hard Life, The Best of Myles, and The Dalkey Archive) to ensure his place, along with James Joyce and Samuel Beckett, as one of Ireland’s great comic geniuses.

Amazon.com Review
A comic trip through hell in Ireland, as told by a murderer, The Third Policeman is another inspired bit of confusing and comic lunacy from the warped imagination and lovably demented pen of Flann O'Brien, author of At Swim-Two-Birds. There's even a small chance you'll figure out what's going on if you read the publisher's note that appears on the last page.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. If ever a book was brought to life by a reading, it is this presentation of O'Brien's posthumously published classic. Norton individually crafts voices and personalities for each character in such a way that a listener might imagine an entire cast of voice talent working overtime. This is a comic/surreal tale of a one-legged gentleman farmer who participates in a poorly planned botched robbery-turned-murder, only to find himself having a long conversation with the dead man shortly after the deed. In addition he hears from his own soul, who he names Joe. Joe's voice is that of a wry observer with a voice of calm, removed authority, whereas dead man Mathers' voice is completely nasal, at once sickly and droll. Mathers sends the farmer to a two-dimensional barracks of three metaphysical policemen. Here he finds himself in a world where people can become bicycles and eternity is within walking distance. Norton's rendition of the main policeman, Sergeant Pluck, tips the reading into a full-out performance. The enormous blustery fellow with red cheeks and brushy mustache and eyebrows is portrayed like a jolly yet dangerous Disney walrus. Norton's Irish brogue, accentuated to different degrees with the various characters, ties the ribbon on a perfect presentation of this absurd and chilling masterpiece. (Apr.)

Review
"As with Scott Fitzgerald, there is a brilliant ease in his prose, a poignant grace glimmering off every page." --John Updike

"A most sardonic novel about life after death with the dead man telling the comic and terrifying story . . . a strange, original comic genius." --New York Times

"Nothing less than dazzling . . . maddening and dizzying . . . heady and exhilarating . . . it is literally funny as hell." --Time

O'Brien is just WEIRD!!! and that's a good thing.
By Colton C. Sorrels
Flann O'Brien isn't for everyone. There are quite a few one star ratings (and I'm sure those people would have rather given it a zero if they could), but I think that's a good thing. Here's why. O'Brien is just weird, bizarre, and perhaps the most "out there" writer I have ever read. Your classic drug trip books like "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "On the Road" have nothing on this guy. If you aren't paying attention to every little detail in the writing then you just aren't going to get it. With that being said, some people are just too dense to get his prose. This is a novelist I want people to hate, because honestly he's my guy...I don't want you to get it.

"The Third Policeman" didn't immerse the reader into O'Brien's unique and bizarre writing style immediately. In fact that was one of the the things about this novel that I found interesting. I thought I was reading gothic literature like Hawthorne, or Brockden Brown at first. It wasn't until the first twenty pages that O'Brien introduces you to the bizarre world in which you will inhabit for the remainder of the novel. There are certain aspects of this novel that I didn't enjoy as much as his first novel, "At Swim Two Birds," but I thought this novel didn't have as many nonsensical moments that dragged on for too long. All in all, this is a great read. This was his second novel, which became his last since it wasn't published until after his death, and it is only the second novel of his I have read. I can't wait to read the rest of them!

Is it about a bicycle?
By Ron Ginzler
Yes, and how people turn into bicycles and vice-versa. It's impossible to categorize this wonderful novel. It combines elements of fantasy, magic realism, horror, humor, satire, and it could only have been written by an Irishman. Finished in 1940 but not published until 1967, a year after the author's death, the main text concerns the adventures of a man who commits a robbery and murder in rural Ireland, but following this, bizarre and impossible things occur when he is captured by two peculiar policemen and imprisoned in a peculiar police station. A series of long footnotes parallel the text, detailing the protagonist's obsession with the absurd physicist De Selby and his crackpot ideas. (This device is copied by Robert Anton Wilson in his Historical Illuminatus Chronicles, and possibly by Nabokov in Pale Fire, though it seems unlikely Nabokov had read the manuscript of the then-unpublished Third Policeman.) Another device, of separating the protagonist into two separate characters who then converse with each other, may have been copied by Phillip K. Dick in his equally strange novel Valis.
The only other writer I know who measures up to this standard of originality, humor and strangeness, is the late, great, R. A. Lafferty. Read this book. Then read it again.

Fall Off Your Chair Hilarious Satire
By David Fortnight
Oh come on--don't tell me you've never read Flann O'Brien? Inimitable pen name of Brian O'Nolan (go figure), the inimitable humorist for the Dublin newspaper and novelist who wrote both in Gaelic and English? You've never heard of Dalkey Archive Press in Illinois--which is named for another one of O'Brien's unique novels (The Dalkey Archive, that is)? And then again, have you read Ulysses, where before or after the library scene (representing the passage by Charybdis and Scylla, I believe)Stephen Daedalus is crossing the square in downtown Dublin and notes that he sees the newspaperman in seedy suit or some such, who is in fact Brian O'Nolan, a contemporary of Joyce's? Well...I highly recommend that you start with THE THIRD POLICEMAN, which in spite of being a translation from the original in Gaelic has to be one of the funniest books ever written in any language. I can't begin to describe it because it is in a genre of its own, something like Gothic-Fantasy-Satirical-Irish Black Humor-Twainian-Humbuggerist-Social Commentary. Some years ago when I was working on some short book reviews for a bookstore newsletter (and that is another long story better left out here), I discovered that my colleague at the time, Doug, had never read THE THIRD POLICEMAN. I immediately secured a copy and vowed that we needed to review the Dalkey Archives Press reprint of the novel IMMEDIATELY! And so the intrepid Doug picked it up and started reading the first chapter while I was typing some other rubbish on a computer. In (approximately) 10 minutes time, he started laughing, and he continued laughing until he was laughing so hard that he fell off the wooden chair he was sitting on and literally rolled on the floor. Now, you may consider this story apocryphal or even inconsequential. But I just wish to declare here, publicly, that that is the only time I have ever seen anyone fulfill that crusty cliche--that I laughed so hard I fell off my chair. Doug could have injured himself, and in fact, he ended up gasping for air and nearly asphyxiating himself over Flann O'Brien. So that's all I'm going to say about this here, except to add that every reader aged 12 years or older (and the occasional brilliant toddler, too) must read Flann O'Brien to expand his or her mental boundaries and contribute to their elasticity. But caveat emptor--don't sit on a bar stool or any seat that is too slippery when you read him. And above all, don't read him near any steep drop offs like a ravine or riverbank, much less while climbing the Matterhorn or Mt. Whitney with spikes and pulleys and all that gear, or visiting the Grand Canyon.

Introduction
People are often moved and challenged by nuggets gleaned on a daily basis— whether from a spiritual devotional, a tip-a-day calendar, or a regularly e-mailed newsletter. But there are few groups who need constant encouragement more than writers— it is, after all, a mostly solitary practice. The Grammar Devotional, then, is here to help you: it has daily reminders of our basic tenets (who versus whom, anyone?); inspiring pro.les of writers and grammarians who have helped English evolve to what it is today; and quizzes, word scrambles, and word searches to help solidify newly learned tips.
English is a messy language. Unlike French, we don’t have a council to decide how we should write or speak. We only have a multitude of competing college handbooks, dictionaries, and usage and style guides, such as The Chicago Manual of Style and The Associated Press Stylebook, which frequently disagree. Space is tight in this book, and I like to keep things simple, but wherever possible I point out when something is a style rather than a rule. Too many people go around believing the way they learned to do things is the only way to do things, when really it’s just one of the acceptable choices.
As you will see, the book is orga nized by generic weeks so you can start any time. It’s meant to be read through, just like a devotional, but we’ve also included an index so you can use the book as a reference guide and quickly .nd speci.c tips when you need them. Most of the time, punctuation is on Monday, Language Rock Stars are on Wednesday, quizzes and word scrambles are on Friday, and word search puzzles and cartoons are on Sunday, although I occasionally deviate from this pattern to keep related entries together.
It may seem like a trivial endeavor, a tip each day, but at the end of a year the knowledge adds up. A year’s worth of new knowledge can imbue your writing with new con.dence. Here’s to better e-mail messages, essays, marketing materials, articles, and novels.  Excerpted from The Grammar Devotional by Mignon Fogarty.

A must-have for grammar lovers!
By Neutron Lurver Reviews
The Grammar Devotional: Daily Tips for Successful Writing from Grammar Girl (TM) by Mignon Fogarty, the Grammar Girl herself, is a must-have for anyone who loves grammar, diction, and the simple, proper use of words. Organized like a religious devotional, the book provides readers with a grammar or writing rule, factoid, or puzzle (word scramble, crossword, etc.) for each day of the year. The tips are quick, humorous, and informative. Because the book is organized in numbered weeks (e.g., Week 1, Sunday), you can start reading it anytime without having to wait for a particular month or the first of the year.

This devotional is best suited for those who already love grammar and who crave a daily dose of Grammar Girl's wit and wisdom. I wouldn't recommend it to those looking for a style manual or a book on writing technique, because it's not organized in that way. If you're looking for that, I would recommend Grammar Girl's Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing.

This little book is so much fun that my spouse and I look forward to reading the tip to each other every day, and I plan to gift a copy to my English professor parents for Christmas!

Grammar is fun!
By Tanya Dennis
With wit and brevity, this book makes grammar fun! Just like a spiritual devotional, this book offers short, daily readings, usually just half a page. The book is organized by generic weeks so you're not restricted by a calendar. Rather, you can start wherever and whenever you want.

The author's love of language comes through in her content which spans from practical tips and rules to history, trivia, and games. Usually punctuation is on Mondays, Language Rock Stars on Wednesdays, quizzes and word scrambles on Fridays, word searches and puzzles on Sundays. Simple line illustrations add dry humor to the book.

The included index allows readers to search for specific content making this an valuable reference book as well.

Final Thoughts: I love it! This book offers an excellent (and easy) way to keep your mind sharp without drudging through long, boring exercises and seemingly irrelevant rules. We often forget what we once knew. This little book serves as a welcome reminder.

From the Author
Like any story, Fine Wine started with a simple idea: an assassin makes a deal. The story was a bit of an experiment, as I wanted to see if I could write something short. Like really, really short, while still telling a complete story. You see, I'd tried this in the past; every effort turned into a much longer work than what I had originally anticipated. Fine Wine, however, went as planned, taking all of an hour or so to get the first draft down.

In the process of writing the story I discovered a character I liked enough to want to revisit. So I wrote Killing the Dead, which was planned as a longer, more involved story meant to reveal a bit more about the character and the world he lives in. With the first two tales forming a base for the character, I decided to expand the series by introducing additional supporting characters, a number of organizations whose motives our witty assassin finds himself opposed to for one reason or another, and a diabolical plan which just might mean the end of everything the Assassin Without a Name holds dear. This larger direction starts with Night of Zealotry and continues into subsequent stories from there.

Each story is a tale unto itself, however, so no cliffhanger endings. While I want readers to come back for the next story, I also want them to leave with a sense of fulfillment. I know how some readers feel about serial style works; rest assured, the Assassin Without a Name series is not a collection of serials, but actual short stories and novellas, each with its own beginning and end.

I hope you enjoy following along with the principal character in theseshorts as I write more of them. Who knows? Maybe he'll get a novel of his own someday.

About the Author
Scott Marlowe divides his time between writing fiction, mountain biking, and designing software systems for the accounting industry. He currently lives in Texas with his wife and two crazy dogs.

Nice Short Story
By Michael Gallagher
This is a good, quick-hit (and dark) short story I read during my lunch break at work, which is ironic considering the scene of this story. While taking less than five minutes to read, the author quickly get you having a visual of the surroundings and situations, and left it with a different ending than you would expect. If you enjoy reading a well-written short story, I would recommend this one especially since it is free here in the Amazon Kindle store.

"But something about the cut didn't feel right...there wasn't even a single, glistening trickle of gastric juice seeping out..."
By Don Kidwell
Author sucked me into the story with aplomb given what appeared to be a grisly scenario only to flip it sunny-side up with comic dialogue making for a great, short read. I'll definitely be looking for more material from this author as he comes up with some clever material!

Good story with a bit of dark humor
By R.M. Prioleau
I'm a sucker for assassin stories, and decided to give this one a shot. For a short story/flash fiction, I thought it was good, but I think there could've been a little less dialogue and a little more action. The hero, who is an assassin has been tasked to kill a merchant, but the twist at the end of the story leaves one to wonder the hero's motives and his true 'skill' in the deathly arts (and also adds a nice touch to showcase the hero's weakness).

The story itself is essentially dialogue between the assassin and the merchant, but I think the author could have done so much more with the 1500 or so words to really make this short piece moving.

Another to Add To My Collection
By LoveHarryPotter
I have three other versions of this wonderful book, each having its own uniqueness and each having its own mythology. I will add this book to the other three. The story of a wee creature who gives his sight to complete strangers and never asking for a reward. Yet, a most wonderous honor awaits him. One he never, ever dreamed of.

The book is simple and though I am a huge HARRY POTTER fan, a STONEHEART fan (by Charlie Fletcher), THE CODE OF CLAW series by the author of the HUNGER GAMES (no, I did no finish reading THE HUNGIE GAMES, threw it on the floor), I always find simple joy in THE STORY OF JUMPING MOUSE. I only wish I could have purchased one which had a dustcover.

Back to THE HUNGIE GAMES and why I threw the book on the floor. No disrespect intended. I was so angry at that cruel, sadistic gubermint forcing children to kill one another for pleasure and their parents, families being forced to watch them die.

Review
'Here is the rueful mystery of human desire and human resignation, in the person of an anonymous telegraph girl. She is no saint, but she is certainly a sister' - Libby Purves

From the Publisher
Hesperus Press, as suggested by their Latin motto, Et remotissima prope, is dedicated to bringing near what is far—far both in space and time. Works by illustrious authors, often unjustly neglected or simply little known in the English–speaking world, are made accessible through a completely fresh editorial approach or new translations. Through these short classic works, which feature forewords by leading contemporary authors, the modern reader will be introduced to the greatest writers of Europe and America. An elegantly designed series of exceptional books.

About the Author
American novelist, short-story writer, and man of letters, James is a major figure in the history of the novel. One of the pioneers of psychological realism and complex prose style, he holds a place as an unparalleled interpreter of the world of today.

Another example of art imitating life.
By haley
I was required to read this book for my American Lit class in college, and though I had heard that James was a bit verbose and that the plot of the novel was purportedly about the life of a telegraph-girl, I nevertheless enjoyed it thoroughly. The novel centers on a young girl who works at the sounding board of an English store. Because she is the main operator, she is privy to all of the customer's private affairs, for she transcribes all of their personal notes. Some of her insights regarding relationships and the often-intimate details of her state of mind seemed to articulate some of my own thoughts. The "hook" of the plot(as concern other female-heroines of her time) revolves around her intense fatuation with a male customer, with whom she eventually falls in love. "In the Cage" is taut, well-written, and eerily similar to the trials and tribulations of everyday life in the present era.

The unnamed main character of Henry James’ 1898 novella In the Cage is a postal clerk who reads the telegrams upper class residents send to each other – making dinner appointments, coordinating vacation schedules, arranging trysts – and has decided that one of them, the Captain – who has manners, speaks well, dresses to the nines – is simply the most attractive man she has ever seen. And, (shades of a Woody Allen movie) in spite of being engaged to one Mr. Mudge, she lets her feelings run rampant.

She begins to walk out of her way going home to pass by the apartment building of Captain Everard on the chance that they might meet.

Meanwhile, she learns more of the life of the beautiful people from her newly rekindled friendship with Mrs. Jordan the widow of a bishop, and in her youth the neighbor who shared the poverty that she, her sister and mother lived in. Now, with her booming business – taking care of the flowers in the apartments of the well to do – Mrs. Jordan is able to fill in some of the picture the heroine desperately wants to be part of, even offering her a job – which she declines.

Then, on one of her evening walks home she miraculously does meet the Captain. This chance encounter allows them to converse outside the formal confines of the postal substation in the tonier part of London that she works in – and at the end of their conversation she tells him that she would do anything (in the sense of “take a bullet”) for him.

The highpoint of her life – far exceeding the proposal of marriage that she gets from Mr. Mudge while on a week’s vacation in the autumn of the year – is the appearance of the Captain at the postal substation who asks her to retrieve a telegram he sent sometime in August. With a feeling of complete control over the fate of the Captain, she is able to tell him the content he is so interested in.

Later, Mrs. Jordan tells her about the Captain who, it turns out, has been blackmailed, apparently, into marrying one of his consorts whose husband has just died; and, most likely hers and the Captain’s paths will never cross again.

She now accepts her fate – a life of marriage to the dependable and devoted Mr. Mudge.

In the Cage illustrates clearly why James is called the novelist of the psychological.

He draws with superb detail:

The infatuation the heroine has for an essential stranger.

Perhaps you remember sitting on your bicycle parked in front of the house of the schoolgirl you thought was perfection but who never acknowledged your existence (except years later when she offers you a ride home from church in her brand new Chevrolet Impala – and you don’t ask her for coffee – some chances really only do come once in a lifetime).

The superiority she feels toward her fiancé, her friend and her coworkers.

Everyone knows the feeling of intellectual – even moral – superiority to the guy standing in front of you on line to the theater who strikes up a conversation with you and you immediately realize that this person is not someone who has been or ever will be part of your world.

The envy she has of the upper class people who patronize the postal substation.

Who hasn’t wished they were walking into their office, with a handful of messages and a sign on the door that says: “See my secretary for an appointment.”

Her control when she is able to repeat from memory the message that Captain Everard needs to retrieve.

Who has not felt the power knowing you have what someone wants – a word, a key, a nod, a gesture pointing them to the service others must still wait for; or, the relief when
someone solves your problem, like the cook’s pass to pay for your breakfast tomorrow because you forgot your wallet today when he says: “I know you – you’re in here all the time.” And, you thought he never even saw you let alone remembered you.

The ennui when Mrs. Jordan reveals the Captain’s true story.

Who has not been punched in the gut of learning the truth about someone that is not the truth you had constructed in your mind – maybe a growing relationship that is suddenly cut off, leaving you with no address, no missive, no nothing – literally falling off the face of the earth (and you thought she liked you, wanted you, enjoyed your company but, in fact, you were probably just a diversion).

The impression you get as you read some of the longest sentences you will ever read is that to take out even a single word would somehow detract from the whole which is indeed great. It is James’ perfect sense of the human condition that makes the story so appealing. In the Cage is nothing more or less than a perfect mirror.

Look at it and smile.

I remember loving these
By J. Mski
My 9 year old son recently started reading and enjoying the 'Choose your Own Adv' series and I had to get him a couple of my old favorites by Edward Packard, including this one and 'Cave of Time'

Real danger and dismay
By Swank Ivy
I read this Choose Your Own Adventure book as a kid, and since I didn't particularly appreciate horror, I think I ended up putting it down. I think the "body shock" idea is one of the scarier forms of horror to me, and as a kid it was of course sharper, so the fact that choices could lead to me getting trapped as a cursed mouse in a haunted house or something made me nervous about reading. I'm pretty sure that the images were creepy all around, and it just didn't suit my taste, but I think a writer is doing a good job if he can convey a real sense of danger and dismay.
