Useful Tools for Raising Emotional Awareness

What I liked best about this book is that it really does live up to it’s claim to move you from “passive learning to active practice.” In the beginning Hayashi introduces the idea of an emotions dictionary and then encourages you to create your own right there within the pages of the book. At first I was irritated by this because it seemed like a lot of work to track your feelings and triggers, but honestly, the tool really did help me to become more aware of my emotions. I also never really thought about how you could use awareness to “process yourself through” emotions (as Hayashi describes it). The section about the 3 types of responses to anger (passive, aggressive, or assertive) is incredibly useful for examining the healthy and unhealthy ways for dealing with this emotion. I also loved the list of questions for dealing with emotions like envy, sadness, anger and fear.

A lot of practical knowledge bundled in a quick read

If you don't have a lot of time for self help books, but want to increase your emotional intelligence, this is a very worthwhile read. The author presents a lot of practical knowledge and actionable steps in approximately 200 pages. Each section contains several blank pages for journaling, which the book encourages as part of the process. And the readers' guide at the end is helpful (even if you don't read this in a group) because it prompts readers to thoughtfully reflect on each step. It's a well written and valuable resource to have in your library.

Must read! Practical "how to" move from negative to positive emotions

If you want to become more emotionally intelligent, this is the book for you. It taught me how to improve my self-awareness and self-regulation skills so that I can now stop an emotional hijack (like, anger or fear) in its tracks, process my negative emotions more productively, get emotionally unstuck, and get back to being the best version of myself. This book gave me the practical steps to do it!
