Poetry. Praise for Hands of the Saddlemaker:

"... [Samaras] is a stern and original poet, whose seriousness and morality seem almost foreign, like that of the Turkish writer Nazim Hikmet or Czeslaw Milosz or Pablo Neruda. His poetry combines social and personal intensities, ancient reverberations and American intonations... this is a poetry of beauty and purity, often painterly..." Liz Rosenberg, New York Times Book Review

An Unusually Ambitious Volume of Poems
By Tricia Bogle
American Psalm, World Psalm is an ambitious book, with all the risks that such ambition entails. Few poets would dare undertake a project as massive as a re-writing of the entire Book of Psalms (150 poems, total), and fewer still would be able to do it well. That means that buying a book like this is a bit like buying a ticket to a high-wire circus act—one fears (or perhaps secretly half-hopes) that the performer may fall. Such is the thrill of watching an artist take risks that we would not (or could not) take ourselves. Samaras’s book is a performance of this order, exploring the limits of language, expression, faith, knowledge, and human breath. The 150 poems in this volume (quite large for a book of poetry) are true to the tone and themes of the Old Testament Book of Psalms, yet are re-envisioned for an American voice with distinct Christian overtones. Here we find—as in the original book of Psalms—heartfelt praises of the Lord, angry chastising of the unfaithful, desperate cries of a forlorn pilgrim, and an overarching sense of struggle and hope. Samaras’s poetic stance (like that of the Psalmists) fluctuates between righteousness and confusion, gratitude and grief, yearning and stillness. This fluctuation is clearly intentional, though readers may find it somewhat disorienting at first. The poems here both provoke and comfort, because Samaras is at turns fiery polemicist and humble spiritual seeker. As with the original Psalms, different poems in this volume will appeal to different readers according to their varying moods or situations. It could be easy for a poetic display like this to become tiresome (Samaras risks playing the poetic virtuoso who can’t resist showing off a little, like a jazz musician whose solo goes on several bars too long). But fortunately Samaras leavens the mix with a touch of humor or self-deprecation at just the right moments (as in the poem “Bring Me the Head of Samaras—47th Psalm”), and he punctuates his anger over the world’s injustices with notes of touching tenderness and compassion (as in “Lord is My Life Long?—124th Psalm”). If this book is a high-wire act, it is certainly a riveting one, and well worth the admission price.

A must read for our century
By Therese A. Tappouni
Nicholas is already a praised and anthologized poet, but here we see the man and his fears for our future along with his praise and hope for what we can be. This is an ambitious book, one that intends to write the psalms for our times, but it succeeds in ways I didn't expect. He is a poet of intense religious sensibilities who loves the humor of Steven Wright and the musical audacity of Frank Zappa. A poet like this does not fit into any category. When he says, in American Psalm "We grew to mass-produce 'self-esteem' in the worst way: when it wasn't earned," he touches a discussion we have refused to have in our politics and our schools. He does it with a gentle side-ways glance, telling us "Only humility can save us." For those who have given up on poetry created in MFA programs, here is a second chance. I will read and re-read this broad-ranging look at who we are and who we can be.

A fascinating collection of poems inspired by the psalms. Thought provoking and challenging but also very accessible to the modern reader.
